World’s largest weather service provider, Weathernews Inc. and Japan’s second cell phone operator KDDI Corporation have jointly started setting up weather sensor units for offering weather information to the affected area, where quite a number of meteorological observation stations had been destroyed and disabled by March 11 disaster.

50 units will be dispersed in hardest-hit prefectures; Miyagi, Iwate and Fukushima to help people there know weather information for their security and safety under the limited access to meteorological information. These units will be a part of their new service “Soratena” which is named after sky (sora) and antenna.

Meisei-developed sensor units are teamed up for this aid by measuring air temperature, humidity, air pressure, solar radiation, rain, ultraviolet strength.

The collected data is available on open service page of Tohoku Earthquake Relief on Weathernews’ website at http://weathernews.jp/tohoku_quake2011/ (only in Japanese).
